Life's Too Short For Tasteless Dessert
12:21 p.m. 2005-04-28

Yesterday was Administrative Assistant Day: Aka: Secretary's Day. It was a nice day. I got a few various potted flowers and a coffee travel mug from fellow employees who I "slave" for, and some of the staff took me and the other 3 "administrative assistants" (somehow, I don't think I get paid enough to assume that title) to lunch at a little odd Asian restaurant that played classical show tune music. If I'm eating Asian I want to hear traditional music, not the musical "Hello Dolly", and I want the waiters in kimonos, not in T-shirts!

Asian food is not my favorite type of food. I was happy that there was at least a buffet to choose from where I was able to get a lot of salad, fried rice and vegetables. There was even dessert--one pan of white pastry with what seemed to look like rasberry filling.

Life is too short to eat blan pastry; no matter how pretty it may look. It might as well have been made in plastic. I brought a plate to the table to share with others at the table, and I and my boss picked at it with our chopsticks. Are you gonna eat it? No, I'm not gonna eat it.. Rita the receptionist suddenly grabbed a fork and lunged at it. We watched her facial expressions as she chewed away. Let's just say she wasn't thrilled. I tried a piece and I found it quite doughy but bland. The fruit filling inside wasn't even sweet. The texture was strange, and it tasted like half cooked tasteless poached soy bean bread; needless to say it was disappointing.

Anyway, by the time I got back to the office, I was craving something sweet. I still had the aftertaste of cabbage from my eggroll in my mouth. I was so ever grateful that Linda gave me a roll of lifesavers of tropical fruit, and I proceeded to eat the whole roll..one after the other. Other employees that went to the luncheon suffered gas pains (thank God I only had on piece of the garlic chicken), and others suffered with an incrediable amount of thirst; JoAnn, a petite co-worker, must have drank her body weight in water that afternoon.

I don't want to seem ungrateful. I enjoyed being treated with a free meal, but I would have much more preferred a veggie sandwich, rather than getting stuck with a piece of cabbage in between my back teeth--darn egg roll! I'm a rabbit--remember? Better yet, a big ole' fashioned chocolate sundae, or REAL pastry would have been perfect!
