Watch your grain....
9:52 a.m. 2005-05-17

I was up early one morning with baby Nick and I learned something quite fascinating on the History Channel. It was about the early days of the Puritan settlement in Salem, Massachusetts. It was quite interesting and I was grateful there was something else on the tube besides info-commercials at 2 am in the morning.

Apparently, the whole hysteria of the witch trials that happened during this time started to begin after citizens were experiencing hallucinations and mild to violent convulsions. The victims of these horrible and unexplainable occurrences seemed to fall on everyone; the young, the old, and even the animals of the settlement. Of course, because these conditions could not be explained, it was classified as “works of the devil” and witchcraft, thus started the whole witch trial saga that we have all heard about for hundreds of years.

I don’t remember all the specifics of this show, remember it was past 2 am while I was watching this, but it was determined recently, that the grain of the settlement might have been contaminated by a fungus that hold the ingredients of the modern day drug, LSD. This probably could explain the early accounts of the early Puritans who recorded that they would see women turn into cows, or why they saw the sky turn red and purple. Too freaky! How tragic however to learn of the hundreds of people, mostly women who were unjustly proscecuted and hanged for being the cause of the explainable. Who would have known that the early staple of the Puritan diet, grain could have been the source of so much “evil?”

Things that make you say….hmmmmm…
