An AAA Weekend!!
9:14 a.m. 2005-06-06

With weekends like the past one, I was wishing I was at work. Pretty bad, huh? Note to the stupid; including me--ALWAYS BRING YOUR CELL PHONE ON LONG TRIPS--even if it means turning around towards home to get it.

Well, the day started out just fine. We had gone to a wedding in the central valley--Gustine, and although the weather was quite unbearably HOT (how do people live out there?), we went to a nice wedding, left at a decent hour, and we were back on our way home--about 6 miles away from home, when.....horror struck---our van just went dead.

Well, hubby managed to "coast" it to the side of the busy highway, magically to a perfect indent in the road, and there we were..stuck with grandma, two kids and a baby. Luckily, Rich didn't have to walk very far until a man in a truck sent by our guardian angel came by and let us use a cell phone to call AAA. About a half hour later the tow truck came, and about a hour later, the taxi finally arrived. You know how scary it is to take a baby out of a car at night with cars passing by doing over 70mph--(NO THE CHP APPARENTLY NEVER DRIVE THIS HWY---NEVER SAW ONE PATROL CAR!!!) Nevertheless, we all got home safely.

The next day, I'm driving down to Santa Cruz, and after doing the grocery store, and stopping for a bite to eat at McD's, my daughter and I and baby head to the car to get back on the highway and get back home. I put my key in the the key hold, but the key does not want to turn and open my door. Lovely. When I bought my car, I was not given the original key to the car, and this key in particular does not open the passenger door side very easily, and the only person who can do it is my husband, who was not there with me. So, I'm on the pay phone calling AAA AGAIN, as I try and open my passenger side of my car with the key. I tried many maneuvers, but I couldn't do it. A hour later, here came the tow truck man who opened my car using a air balloon device and a hook in a matter of 10 seconds. I was awestruck.

Yes, I finally made my way back home and my groceries did not spoil after it sat in my car for a few hours under the warm sun, but---I cannot lock my car without keeping my window open, or I will have to call AAA AGAIN.

I also had a scare earlier this morning, while I was making my way over the highway towards work---the CHP Patrol FINALLY made an appearance, but the darn think was behind me, and I was driving may 5 miles over??? I dunno. I switched lanes and put the brakes, and I dared not look back with fear that sudden eye contact would make him want to pull me over. I could tell, for a moment there that he was almost side by side to my car, and I could see that he was looking inside of my vehicle. Could the mere sight of a sleeping baby in the car seat, and my sleeping 10 yr old son (almost 11) make him have pity on me and not pull me over? Or was he attempting to make me look at him, while he made a look of disapproval? I don't know, but, he passed me, and I saw him later about a mile up waiting there on the side of the highway. WHERE WERE YOU SATURDAY???!!!

Anyways....I'm driving very carefully nowadays.. I need another weekend to recover.
